Retake - Web Comic

I've been on Drunk Duck for a while now and while much of the content there does not float by boat this comic certainly does. Retake by Dave and Dan (Mr Hades). Is a take on one of those classic superhero type stories. Guy down on his luck, in this case a frustrated actor, gains mysterious powers through alien technology and so on. The thing about this take on a classic theme is that it is actually very good.

The Writing
There seems to be a definite direction that this comic is heading in. The characterization is really good and makes the main character instantly likeable, if a little irritating. As the story progresses there are similarities in themes to properties like Ben 10, Marvel's Darkhawk, XO-manowar from Valiant, Robert Kirkman's Tech Jacket and so on. However its well worth a read and has some interesting subplots developing running alongside the main story.

The Art
Mr Hades (Dan Butcher) is definitely one to watch in the future. I've been a fan of his work over on the penciljack forums for a few years now and his stuff seem to get better and better. I'm expecting big things from him in the mainstream industry in the future. His art reminds me allot of DJ Coffman's style on Hero by night although not quite as polished yet. but every page he turns in seems to get better and better.

Flobots - Web Comic

Right. Rise of the Flobots is a story about a guy who keeps putting up campaign signs and keeps getting them destroyed or broken. . . No it's a story about an Iraq Veteran who has been sidelined due to injury and longs to be back in the field. . . No actually its a story about Robots in a far flung future that a fighting for survival in a post apocalyptic worlds or so it seems. I actually have no idea what Flobots is about. I started reading it because I was a fan of DJ Coffman's Hero by Night over at Drunk Duck. and was gutted when that stopped. I found out that he was doing stuff with the Band Flobots and thought I check it out.

The Writing
As a fan of DJ Coffman, I enjoy his writing style and know that it will lead somewhere interesting. Once I got past the two seemingly unrelated intro stories the main strip set in the future show lots of promise and feels like it could burst into life at any moment. Still waiting though.

The Art

I'm a fan of DJ's art. its simple yet good enough to keep you interested. It's easy to follow and has a very animated feel to it. I sometimes feel that animated style give a false sense of fun to some of the more serious scenarios in the storyline, but that's just a minor gripe. The colours are really good.

Surfboards and Rayguns - Web Comic

Wizer is a surf Bum/Instructor who spends his days teaching in a beautiful sun kissed beach setting. Den-Arria is a space age warrior caught up in some kind of Galactic war. The two of them get thrown together and we have Surfboards and Rayguns. Bradley Overall shows lots of talent and promise with this online comic. A regular schedule could make this one of the coolest online adventures available.

The Writing
Shows lots of promise. Still in the very early stages, only a handful of pages uploaded so far. The Concept is one of Aliens and Intergalactic warfare descending upon earth and landing smack right into a scene from Point Break. Some of the main characters are already being fleshed out but there is enough to keep you wanting more.

The Art
Very cool art and colours. The art reminds me of cartoons such as "The Batman" and "Megas XLR". The main female character reminds me of Kiva. The art is very fluid and works really well with the story. A very professional finish would not surprise me if this title went on to get published.

Acrobat - Web Comic

Acrobat is a story of a superhero sidekick who after loosing his mentor makes the step up from sidekick to full blown hero, while dealing with all the normal issues of teenage life.

The Writing

Considering that the creator of this book is in his teens he does a very good job of conveying the emotional state of a teenage boy and the struggles that any teenager faces. He also does a good job and showing how that teenage kid deals with all the problems associated with being a costumed hero in ever expanding universe full of various challenges and revelations.

The Art

This is where, i think, many people might fall down with Acrobat as the art at the beginning of the story is that of a teenage kid with hopes of being a comic artist one day. As the story progresses (up to 17 online issues at time of writing this) You will see major developments in style and quality. I think that JD Smith will become a comic superstar in the coming years. for one so young he shows an great understanding of storytelling and pacing as his style develops i firmly believe he will fulfill the comic artist dream.
