Top 10 Cool Webcomics November - December 2011

Way over due an update to my top 10 cool webcomics. A few of my favourites have ended since I last did a top 10 so great online comics like Acrobat, The Fowl and Freakangels are now complete. You can still read them at their respective site. Anyway, here's the current rundown for November/December 2011

It's a real struggle trying to get this down to 10 comics as there are so many good webcomics out there now. A few that came really close and may get into the top ten at some point are Spindrift, Adler's Watch, False Positive and Deathboy.

I do get lots of submissions and don't have the time to respond to every one (i only get about 20 minutes free time per month to mess around online, mostly I work, or be a dad, or clean, or be a husband, or train, or sleep. so I'm sorry if i don't get back to you.) However if I see something that is awesome I will most definitely come back to you and post it on the blog. It might even make the Top 10.

Time for some more of the Cool Webcomics that I've been shouting about on Twitter. . . well typing about at least. At last count I'm up to 86 followers and can't believe that 86 people are interested in what I'm saying. Once I get a couple million more I'm gonna start some kind of cult. Hey folks,
I don't get to post full comic profiles as often as I'd like but if you follow me on Twitter you'll know that I've started to Tweet about Some of the cool webcomics I found out there on that Internet thing. so with this post I thought I'd update you on what I've been tweeting about so anyone not on the old twitter bandwagon can also click through to the awesome webcomics i tweet about.

I think going forward this may be the new format for posts. So by following me on Twitter you'll get links to all these cool webcomics and more a few days quicker than they'll apear here, but if you want a bunch of comics all listed together with basic info about them, then this is the place to come

The Rioteer over on WEVolt is a good one to start on. Click here to go read that.

Next up is Geist which is a little bit different to the stuff I normally post about although still very good and has lots of promise. To read Geist click here.

Now this next one is an online garphic novel that has been completed and is available for you to read in full. Heartless Dark by Phillip and Adam Sevy. To read it click here.
Synopsis
Heartless Dark follows both Matthew and Ailis, two people at opposite ends of an apocalyptic prophecy, as they struggle to link global occurrences, personal events, and historical writings in a race to save the world.

OK about big mech robots and city destroying monsters. Kill all Monsters has that covered. Go here to read this high octane slugfest. Kill all Monsters is by Michael May and Jason Copland.
This webcomic is lots of fun and well worth a read (not that the others are not, i just don't have a synopsis for this one)

Some Superhero goodness now with Frostfire. I enjoyed this one hope you will too. Go here to read it.

Next is Wayward Sons: Legends. An Epic Sci-fi, fantasy, super powered, mythilogical saga with great art and a cool story. Read Wayward Sons: Legends here.
Synopsis
The Pantheans have just prevailed in a bloody civil war. Things go quickly awry while attempting to imprison the traitorous Kronos and a multitude of monstrous intergalactic criminals. Now the crew of the Ulympea, led by Captain Suras, must do whatever it takes to stem a full-scale prison break. What happens next, however, is completely unexpected! What starts as a straight forward Sci-Fi story, soon takes twists and turns into a genre-bending epic that defies explanation.

Red Moon Rising is really nice and is building to be another epic webcomic. Read it here.
Synopsis
Red Moon Rising is a full-colour steampunk fantasy webcomic set in the midst of a magic-fuelled industrial society, following one person’s small mistake and the knock-on effect it has on the people and the world around them.

Next I tweeted a link to Danielle Dark. If you like vampires then you'll like this. if you don't like Vampires then I suggest checking this out because its got so much more going on and the art is nice too. Read it here.

Vanguard - Web Comic

This Comic is one I've been watching for a while. It's a superhero webcomic, which are pretty rare things to find online, well good ones anyway.
The creator Dan Butcher(Mr Hades) is a prolific online comic creator/collaborator having worked on other webcomics such as Retake(I blogged about this one) and Heros Unite over on DrunkDuck.
Having cut his teeth on those other books Dan's new comic Vanguard shows a certain level of craft and maturity that you dont get on many webcomics.

I'm really enjoying Vanguard but when it came to writing up this blog I was at a loss when trying to describe it. On the face of it, this looks like your typical superteam story but after a few pages you start to get concepts of a much larger story going on. My initial impression was of a superhero team like the Avenger or the Justice League but this got drastically changed when the team is sent on a rescue mission which becomes more of a military covert ops team of super soldiers.
I was having trouble labelling it so I did the only smart thing I could think of. I emailed Dan Butcher and asked him to describe it.

Here's what Dan says.
"Vanguard is the story of a team of genetically enhanced meta-humans employed by the British government to protect the nation’s interests, at home and abroad. It is set in the not too distant future, where the world is becoming more politically and economically unstable. There are food riots, water and power shortages and a rising crime rate as day to day living becomes more of a struggle. The story begins with a simple rescue mission and events spiral from there."

Now that's a perfect description, I wish I could have done that. Anyway, moving on.

The Story
Really good concepts and some excellent scripting so far have made me really enjoy this comic. Good character interaction and development are keeping me interested and coming back for more.
The Art
I've written about Dan's art before when I blogged about Retake(Go see that post) so all I'm going to say on this one is that his skills continue to develop, his colour work is vibrant and intense his use of textures and cg background and props integrate well with the line work. Go see for yourself and enjoy the comic.

Pictures of You - Web Comic

This online graphic novel is, in my opinion, a sort of slice of life drama about Peter Morris and his friends through their college years. Sounds awesome, right? Right?
Sounds about as dull as possible.
However, this is probably one of the few webcomics that i could not stop reading. Seriously I read it solid until i got to the latest page. It's funny, serious, scary, intense, irreverent, engaging, sad and intriguing. A bit like the Wonder Years but done really well and much more relevant to actual life and no Fred Savage (Not that I have anything against Fred), but its still a plus point.
The set up is the hook, The story starts with Peter and Andy heading to a party with Peter thinking about his life, where he's at now, leading him to reminisce about the friend he had through college/Uni.
There is so much that happens to start saying more would begin to spoil things so I'll go with a few random words that may get you more interested.
How about drinking, playing chess, smoking weed, forming a band, falling in love, homophobia, cultural ineptitude, spousal abuse, more drinking, lots more smoking weed, strippers, porn movies, more weed smoking, star wars and Muligan. And that's just scraping the surface.

Oh, and it updates every other day.

Golden Boy - Web Comic

I found this little gem by accident as I was trawling through webcomicsnation.com looking for some new material to post about. To be honest I don't know why I even looked at it as it's not what I'd consider my genre of interest but as i read through the first few pages I was hooked. The story went in a totally different direction than i was expecting and by the time I reached the end I was . . . . . . . . I might just leave it there and let you make up your own mind on the web comic. Here's how the creator describes it. "Golden Boy is about Cole "Golden Boy" Parker, a retired boxer who has lost his way into a lonely life. A violent encounter with a young criminal causes Cole to change his life back to when he was happy, when he was a champion."

The Writing
I didn't know too much about the creator of this webcomic "Max Riffner" but much of the story feels very real as if he's pulling it together from life experience or from events he's read or heard about somewhere. I'm in no way saying he's ripped it off though. It's a really good story that would make an excellent movie. In fact it does remind me of the Wrestler Movie from a couple of years ago in term of it feel and atmosphere. For me I feel like the story was over too soon. I feel it could have run and run. The character were interesting and the plots were deep, but i guess that's just how life goes sometimes. . . You're gonna need to read it to know what I'm talking about. I've since been a checked out Max's website and found that Golden Boy is only the tip of the iceberg of his creative talents(Links are below).

The Art
I'm not going to say too much about the art as all I seem to say about webcomics art is that the art is not so good at the start but gets better as it goes on. What I will say about it is that I do love the use of colour throughout the story. Its sometimes very subtle and sometime very full on. It worked for me. The Use of photos to establish location was also a nice touch

Artist Showcase - Emmanuel Francisco JR

Emmanuel Francisco Jr is a name that I think we'll be hearing lots over the next few years. He's a really talented up an coming artist I watch over at DeviantArt. His gallery over there is filling up nicely with loads of awesome pieces of art. You'll see some of my faves in this post.

His art style is influenced by many of the greats in the industry but he's developing his own unique style allowing his personality to flow into the art.

What first got you into comic books?
Early on as a little kid I was a big fan of those Saturday morning cartoons featuring the Superfriends, Spiderman, the Hulk or Captain America. But I was first exposed to the comics version when a classmate of mine in fourth grade brought Superman comics to school. I was hooked instantly. Soon after that I started going to the old comic bins in the local second hand bookstore because I couldn't afford new comics. Being eleven years old can do that to you. That's where I discovered the X-men, the Teen Titans, the Dark Knight, and of course, Wolverine. It was also around that time that I started paying attention to the writers and artists.

Who is your favourite comic book character?
I'm more of a fan of characters done by a particular artist. I love Spiderman done by Todd Mcfarlane and Humberto Ramos, Moon Knight done by Dave Finch and Stephen Platt, Wolverine done by Marc Silvestri, Death Dealer done by Frazetta, and the X-men done by Jim Lee. But, of course, there are characters that are just too cool looking regardless of who draws them, like Batman, Spawn, and Withblade.

Who are your major artistic influences?
The first artist I really idolized was George Perez, and I still do. His attention to detail influenced the way I do my art today. Then I discovered the Filipino artists during the Filipino invasion of the 70's. I was astounded by the level of quality these guys did. Totally ahead of their time. Artists like Alex Nino, Alfredo Alcala and Nestor Redondo. Also round that time I discovered and was influenced by Frank Frazetta. Then there's the Image founders, who changed the face of comics in the 90's. Soon came Stephen Platt and Joe Madureira. And I have to say Nicky Manabat. The attention to detail that I learned from George Perez was raised to another level when I first saw Nicky Manabat. Nowadays, I only have eyes for David Finch.

What comics do you currently read?
I'm currently following two books religiously--Invincible and Walking Dead. I also bought the first issue of Guarding the Globe, might continue that. I was looking forward to the new Wetworks miniseries but now that Wildstorm's closing down, it might not come out anymore.

What are you currently working on?
I'm on the early stages of a new miniseries, but I'm not yet allowed to divulge the details. All I can say is, it's gonna come out in France, it's got a high-tech, militaristic theme to it, and it's ultra-violent. I'm loving every minute of it. Nice to do something different from all the spandex-clad super-heroes I did in the past. Hopefully I can post some art soon. So stay tuned.

What is your dream project?
My dream project would be doing Cyberforce and World of Warcraft. I also want to finish Battle Chasers, the first Cybernary series, and Soul Saga. I just love sci-fi and fantasy. In the superhero genre, it would definitely be Batman.

The Replacements - Web Comic

I stumbled across this web comic just floating around on Comixpedia. and I'm so glad i did. It was a great read and a fantastic find. Now I'm sure some of you will have already read this comic as it was fist posted online way back in 2003. This might be considered a Golden Age webcomic(wow epic fail on humour there). Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this and read it in one sitting. I hope that you enjoy it too and if you've read it before then go back and check it out again. you wont be disappointed.

The Writing
There is a nice flow to this comic. as each of the main characters are introduced you simply accept them. The heroes are pretty typical. There's a reluctant hero, a full on wanna be hero and a robot who appears to be John Wayne. What more could you want. . . OK how about a villain hell bent on revenge for being jailed for years and years so he just want the whole world to suffer. What about cool evil henchmen with robot arms or hook chains for eyes. I can top that too. How about lots of other dimension monsters ripping up stuff and causing mayhem. This comic has all that and more.

The Art
The art has a manga-esque feel to it with a touch of cartoon goodness. Not normally my cup of tea but it does suit this story. Its black and white but don't let that put you off as many of the best webcomics are. The action scenes work well and the quiet moments are well paced. The art is by Sara Turner and Jerzy Drozd.

Artist Showcase - Guile Blackpanther

Time for another artist showcase. Now this guy is an artist I've been watchin (not in a pervy way) on DeviantArt for a while. I think he is an artist who is destined for very big things and the sooner Joe Q at marvel realizes that there is not anyone who can touch his spiderman art the better. He draws Spiderman better than almost anyone I've seen with the exception of maybe McFarlane. His art style has a hint of European flavour to it, maybe becuase he's a frenchman. Much of his artwork reminds me slightly of Olivier Coipel but only in terms of stylistic similarities he is in no way a clone. Anyway I sent Guile and email and he answered the question below to give a liittle insight into his work and comic tastes.

What first got you into comic books?
I don't remember exactly, but I think I was maybe 4 when my uncle was reading me the adventures of Spidey in his french translated comicbooks! It was the first contact and love at first read!

Who is your favourite comic book character?
Spider-Man (No surprises here)

Who are your major artistic influences?
Nowadays, I would say Olivier Coipel, Leinil Yu, Jim Cheung, Stuart Immonen and Mike Mignola.

What comics do you currently read?
A lot of Marvel comics, some DCs and independant comicbooks, no mangas

What are you currently working on?
Videogames character designs, advertisements and working on my own comicbook stuff when I got spare time!

What would be your Dream Project?
Amazing Spider-Man or Thor, then my own comibook

Jesus Christ: In the Name of the Gun - Web Comic

Ok. Now for a little web comic that may or may not get me grief from some religious types. Before I go any further please be aware that i did not draw or write this webcomic, so aim your anger over there at the heretics who have created this abomination. I do however find it thoroughly entertaining and this it should be made mandatory as part of any modern religious education curriculum(ha). Jesus kicks some serious ass in this violently hilarious webcomic. Imagine Bruce Campbell running around in a tabard with a beard and a wrist mounted time machine.

The Writing
I find the flow of this online strip just perfect. There is enough detail played out to keep you interested in the bigger picture but the main focus, so far, seems to be on the all out action and terrific one liners. Some of the gags are genius. I won't go too much into the story but here is my take on it so far. Jesus (The son of God) Christ has decided that the way history has panned out is a bit shit. so he sets about fixing things. Now to do this he's gonna need to be able to travel through time to certain points in history and right the wrongs that he sees as being done. Want to know more? Of course you do so go read it.
Eric Peterson has crafted an enjoyable and, as it continues, a very intriguing story which is fast becoming one of my favourite webcomics.

The Art
So far there is one complete volume with the second volume well underway. The art in the first story arc is by Ethan Nicolle who's art is of the cartoony variety. It does work well with the fantastical plot of the comic and where it needs to be it can be dark and powerful. I get a slight tang of Robert Crumb in this art, which is very cool. The Artist on the second volume is a guy called Ryan Cody. Now I'm familiar with Ryan's work as I follow his art on his Deviant art site, so I'm already a fan. Ryan's art is nice and simple. He has an amazing skill with blacks with his art reminiscent of Paul Grist creator of Jack Staff and Kane.

Gunnerkrigg Court - Web Comic

This is an amazing web comic that chronicles the happenings at GunnerKrigg Court.
The character development throughout this masterpiece is so good you'll be in love with all the characters within the first few chapters.
The main focus of the story centres around Antimony "Annie" Carver, a child with unique gifts that allow her to talk to dead people, who's parents both went to Gunnerkrigg years earlier.
There are obvious comparisons to the Harry Potter books with regards to the setting and basic initial premise but in my opinion the character development in this world is far superior to what JK Rowling did with the Potter books. (Hope that comment does not open me up to a barrage of abuse from Potter fans)
So many different themes run through this story, there are magical themes, scientific themes, religious themes, fantasy themes and they all seamlessly meld together to create a fantastic story which i find myself desperate to read every day.
I don't really want to say much else about it as the comic itself is the best way of finding out more.

The Art
As is the case with most webcomics the art really develops over the course of the story. Tom Siddell has really grown as an artist over the course of the comic. With over 28 chapters now online it's wonderful to watch Tom develop as he develops the story.

Been off the grid for a while.

I've still been finding and reading lots of new Web Comics and over the next few weeks I'll be starting to showcase the ones that I feel are worthy of your attention.

There's quite a lot been happening in the world of Web Comics over the past year. The launch of smart phone comic reading apps have made access to mainstream comics in a digital format nice and easy.

Since i got my Iphone I've been keeping up with a few gems from Comixology and IDW. Marvel has also launch it's own Comic reading app powered by Comixology. Lots of excellent stuff to check out and it's all relatively cheap(some are free but mostly just samplers and first issues).

I've been reading lots of online comics and keeping up to date with many of the ones I've previously posted about.

Freakangels has been going strong since I first showcased it in Feb of last year. Its now on to the 5th volume and is definitely worth a read. Warren Ellis is a master storyteller and the art just gets better and better.This week's update is an excellent jumping on point. (Original Blog Post)

Questionable Content is still updating focusing on the lives of Martin, Pintsize and the gang. This is the online comic version of "Friends" but much more geeky and funnier. (Original Blog Post)

Acrobat continues to impress with fun superhero stories that have excellent character development and artwork that gets stronger and stronger. The Comic is now also available from CrankyOctopus.com which seems to be faster than Drunk Duck for image downloads and has other equally good web comics for your reading pleasure. Anyway more to come soon. I have some some really fantastic web comics to tell you about and I'm looking forward to turning you on to them.

The Guns of Shadow Valley - Web Comic

Do you like Cowboys? I do. How about cowboys with superpowers? Yup, me too?

The Guns of Shadow Valley is an amazing online comic set in the old west(at least i think it is, it may be set on an alien world or something. Time will tell).The cast of well developed characters are instantly likable with just enough intrigue about them to keep you interested. Without giving too much away about the story, not that much can be given as we are still in build up mode, the story seems to centre around Sheriff Bill Dawson and a Super fast Gunslinger by the name of Frank "Breakneck" Kelly. The Sheriff is putting together a Posse to do something in Shadow Valley and Frank is coerced into joining. . . There much more than that happened but I'm not into spoiling a really good story.

The Writing
This is written well. The characters are quickly defined by the dialogue and action giving you an instant feel for each of the new ones introduced. As with all good stories you are presented with various questions about character motivations, back story and hidden agendas but its written is such a way that you can get a feel for each of the character within their first few lines of dialogue or their first actions. I originally came across this online comic last year and although I liked it there was not enough for me to justify a feature on here, but now. . oh boy its groovy

The Art
The art in this online comic is a wonder to behold. The colour scheme that the artist uses is perfect for setting the tone, feel and firmly establishes a rustic, wild west platform which allows the beautifully drawn characters to stand out and jump of the page. the backgrounds are both detailed when required and sparse/barren when the story calls for it. The art goes a long way to making this story work.

Artist Showcase - Rudy Vasquez

Next up we have a an up and coming superstar Rudy Vasquez. Rudy is another artist I found on DeviantArt. I absolutely love his hyper detailed pencils. Rudy has worked on various projects and by what i see is getting better and better every time his pencil touches paper. His style reminds me of some of my favourite artists from the 90's including Jim Lee, Dave Finch and Liam Sharp(note: these are still some of my favourite artist) although he truly has his own style which has obviously developed from a love of great comic art. I can see Rudy becoming a much bigger name in comics over the next few years.

Below, Rudy has answered some questions to give you an insight into him as an artist and fan.

What first got you into comic books?
Well, I remember being given a small novel sized color collection of Stan Lee's and Steve Ditko's run of Spider-Man but what made me really want to be a penciler was Punisher War Journal #8 by Jim Lee. I remember thinking..."This art isn't the same as everything else, it's special." So, it inspired me to want to do the same.

Who is your favourite comic book character?
That's easy. I'd have to say, Spider-Man. For the same reasons most people love him. He's so relatable. Most of us without a silver spoon inour mouths have experienced being late on rent or at least stressing over it. Having to do laundry, juggle our job and love life without compromising a dream. Only in Spidey's case, it's less a dream than what he feels is his responsibility. Well, we have to recognize that even though none of us have special powers like a super hero, we do have special abilities nonetheless. It can be, writing talents, drawing, singing or whatever it might be. With great talent comes great responsibility. We shouldn't waste what God has gifted us with, even if we have to juggle the rent too.

Who are your major artistic influences?
Well, I'd say Jim Lee but luckily when people see my art it's usually a different comparison. I'm grateful for that because even though Jim's been a huge inpsiration I don't want to be a xerox machine. We all have to find our own voice. I do incorporate a little of everyone I admire though, even if it's in a small way. I love, Leinel Yu, Steve Rude, Hiroaki Samura, John Romita. just to name a few.

What comics do you currently read?
I'm way behind but anything from Carnival Comics of course, One-eyed Jack! by Jon Castaneda, and Spider-Man books.

What are you currently working on?
I'm the head artist at Carnival Comics and I'm doing the art for Jazan Wild's Carnival of Souls and The Funhouse of Horrors. I'm also doing a creator owned book with writer Justin Carmona about a native El Paso super-hero called the Black-Bird. I'm excited about both because Jazan Wild has such precise vision with Carnival of Souls and the Black-Bird will give me the opportunity to have a commentary on something unique like a border city. Keep in mind that the Carnival of Souls is and will be available through your cell phone as an app, or on myebook.com for free. You should really take advantage of that!

Artist Showcase - Carl Riley

New Feature Time!!
To Start of this new feature I could think of nothing better than talking to a fellow brit. I first came across Carl's work on his DeviantArt Page. His stuff reminded me of my favourite time in comics, the early 90's. As it turns out, read his answers below, I was spot on. Now over the last couple of years his style has developed and been refined to what you see here.

I dropped Carl an email and asked him to answer a few question so you can all know a bit more about him as well as see his artwork.

What first got you into comic books?
I first got in to comics about 10 years ago when friend of mine introduced me to Fathom and Michael Turners art. As an art student myself I was amazed at the quality of work and have been hooked ever since.

Who is your favourite comic book character?
I have a few but I'd have to go with Aphrodite ix, a super hot cyber chick created by David Finch back when i first got in to comics.

Who are your major artistic influences?
Turner and Finch have been two of my biggest influences from the outset. In more recent years I've discovered the talents of Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri, Ebas, Tyler Kirkham and various other artists with the 'Top Cow' feel to their work. Joe Mad! and Mark Brooks are two more with a different style I really look up to.

What comics do you currently read?
I started out with the books such as Witchblade, Fathom, Darkness and still read those today. I went through a stage of reading Marvel books but soon tired of endless 'superhero saves the world' stories.

What are you currently working on?
As a new dad I've not got a great deal of time on my hands for drawing right now so have had to turn down long running projects. I'm currently concentrating on commission which also help beat the credit crunch!

What is your dream project?
I'd love to work for Top Cow or Aspen as a cover artist or interiors. I guess my dream would be that Aphrodite ix would be bought back and I'd get to do the pencils....errrr.... but that is NEVER gonna happen!

Melody - Web Comic

Straight from the Zuda Synopsis: Through chance, Mel comes into possession of the melody to “the greatest song in the world”... but not the lyrics. The tune comes straight from the Muse Of Song and it’s of supernatural power, everyone who hears it will love it! Various groups of people (politicians, the church, advertisers), they all want it for their own means. By providing their own lyrics they could shape it to be the ultimate propaganda song. Some try to buy Mel, some to charm her, some to intimidate her. And when ruthless ex-spy, Damien, goes after her she soon finds herself running for her life. She has to stay alive and do the right thing with the divine melody in her head...Now if only she could find out what the right thing is!

The Writing
I originally read the first 8 pages back when this was part of the monthly competition and was not all that impressed, not that my initial opinion mattered as it finished in 1st place winning that month's competition. I revisited this comic recently and found it had been completed. After reading through the 60 pages of well scripted, thoroughly entertaining story I take back my initial unimpressed stance. This is a really good story although i feel it might have ended too soon. We were just really getting to know the characters and their motivations.

The Art
The art is Nice, good solid structure and fantastic colours. Illias Kryriazis has been a pro since 2001 and it shows in this highly polished web comic. Not overly simple and not too detailed the art really lends itself to the Zuda framework. It does have a kind of European feel to it, although this may be because the artist is from Greece, which is a good thing. As with many of the newer Zuda Comics the artist seems to have designed his panels to fit a screen rather than a page and some of the layouts are really innovative. I'll definitely be checking out some of his other stuff.

Hi Folks,

just dropping by to apologise for the lack of updates to this blog. Way back in the first part of the year I was roaring along posting lots of Cool Webcomics for you to read. This blog was really starting to take off.

Out of the Blue I got an email from a viewer questioning my scoring system (marks out of 10). I thought about it quite a bit and in the end i agreed with this reader that the scoring system was naff. So rather than sort it out i got a bit disillusioned with the updating the blog.

Fast Forward to now. .

I'm taking away the scoring system. Instead I'll add a some information comparing the featured web comics to other things that I feel are similar in tone, genre or look. i.e. If you like Blade-Runner then Precession is a good fit for you and so on.

In Addition to Features on Webcomics I'm going to be posting some features about artists I like and featuring some of their work with links to their sites etc. I feel this still falls under the Cool Webcomics banner as they will be comic artist or aspiring comic artist who draw comics/comic related images and put them online so in essence still Cool Webcomics (stuff).

Anyway that's all for now. Thank you all for reading and sticking with me. I hope that I can bring you lots more webcomics to read and some really cool art to look at.

Lilly MacKenzie and the Mines of Charybdis - Web Comic

How best to describe this. . . A beautiful Space fairing, Ginger, half Scottish, half African American beauty, who kicks some serious butt and hangs around with a vertically challenged, pink haired engineer of sorts, who appears to love her unconditionally but is happy just to be friends go on an adventure into deep space with possibility of no return. . . . Sounds good to me are you interested yet?

Writing
As the above suggests this story is pretty involved and hooks you from the very start and then rolls along at a nice pace allowing you to take in the scale and scope of the galaxy spanning storyline. The characterization through the story is just sublime. Cosmo is by far my favourite character so far although Lilly also really cool. Simon Fraser(The Creator) has a fantastic imagination and his attention to the fine details of the Science Fiction he has created just blow me away.

Art
Simon Fraser is both the writer and artist of this wonderful webcomic and his style is an absolute joy. It reminds me of Barry Windsor Smith with a slice of Brian Hitch or Alan Davis and a topping of Steve Dillon and Kevin McGuire. Now Simon has been around for a good few year working on Stuff for 2000AD, IDW and various other things. Be sure to check out his Nikolai Dante stuff.

Celadore - Web Comic

Sticking with Zuda for this one. This was another one I kinda missed. I remember reading the original eight pages and thinking that is was nice but do we really need a Buffy Junior. . . Turns out we do and Celadore is Buffy Junior and a whole lot more.

The Seemingly familiar story of a strong sexy female Vampire hunter begins as it should, with her fighting a couple of vamps, but before you know it the story flips over and gives us the mesmerizing adventures of a prepubescent vampire hunter with a supporting cast that has something for everyone.

Writing

Fast paced adventure that slows down every so often to let you catch your breath. We have vampires, Fairies, Monsters and much more. The first arc introduces us to the main characters and effortlessly presents their personalities, backgrounds and abilities without the usual flashback nonsense(I've been over it a few times and it still surprises me how quickly I became familiar with the cast). Some really interesting twists and turns make this comic one to watch. Writing this I've read about 120 pages and now look forward to reading it on a regular basis.

Art
This is a weird one. At first glance I thought "nah, not for me" then I thought "kinda suits the tone of the story" which lead me on to "this is actually pretty cool" and now I'm all "I should try and draw like this guy". The style of the art has a Saturday morning cartoon feel mixed with a bit of Mike Avon Oeming of "Powers" fame. Bright and colourful but dark and shadowy when needed.

High Moon - Web Comic

Ok now, where to start with this one. High Moon , was one the first winner of Zuda's monthly competition. I initially never looked twice at as the original 8 pages never looked that good. How wrong was I? I took another look at it the other day and was absolutely blown away. I must be a bit slow on the uptake because i totally missed it.
Now on to my review. .
Werewolves . . . Check. Vampires . . . Check. Cowboys . . . Check. Three of my favourite film genres all wrapped up in a handy little flash webcomic along with Native American spirits/demons and some really strong characterisation and storrytelling make this one of my new fave webcomics. And should, in my opinion, become a new monthly printed comic under the vertigo label as it ould fit perfectly in that line.

The Writing
Really good, Twists and turns around the old wild west in ways remnicent of the Unforgiven movie mixed in with Buffy the Vampire slayer. Throw in a smattering of Steampunk, or a bit of wild wild west. . . . nah, scrap that i dont want to sour your conceptions of this great comic.

The Art
As I've said above I did not dig this when I first saw it but the art rally grows on you and suits the style of the story. Kinda reminds me of Dan Brereton of Nocturnal Fame, but with a smoother finish, not as angular as Brereton. Dark and brooding suits this perfect.

Monster Plus - Web Comic

Newsarama turned me on to Action Age Comics run by Chris Sims and Chad Bowers. Chris does the Super Invincible Blog and Chad is the creator of Doctor Impossible and Action Ace. Oh boy what a find. Here you have a couple of guy who obviously love the art form of comics and together have created some really cool online content for readers to devour.

Now on to Monster Plus. Action Age site says "Mark Darke thought he had it all under control, but his plans didn’t account for the return of a Mummified Werewolf Zombie Vampire Frankenstein Witch Doctor From Mars and his gang of teenage sidekicks!" I could not put it better.

The Writing
Vampires, Monsters, Aliens , Superheroes and a clone of Dracula as a teenager. That's just a few of the things that appear in the first few pages of the comic. The way the story flows kinda reminds me of Savage Dragon and the plethora of weird and wonderful characters does enhance the similarity. There is however no similarity to the Dragon in the actual story. I really like where this is going and plan to continue reading it.

The Art
One word to say about the art. Fun. Its not the best art I've seen in an online comic and its not the worst. Some of the anatomy of the characters is off and some of the panels look flat but for the most part the art is solid and does not detract from the story. Shows lots of potential for development. I can see Nathan Kroll becoming a major force in the comic industry if his art continues to develop.

Eye of the Gods - Web Comic

OK here's how the site describes it. Eye of the Gods is a psychological thriller about a man who's life spirals out of control when he is cursed with the ability of remote viewing.

Sean Black, an artist, has a surgery to clone his eyeballs and replace his existing eyes with the clones, restoring his failing vision. After the operation, he has a "dream" about a murder, only to discover that it really happened……But the death isn't being reported as a murder. When his curiosity gets the best of him, it sets off a chain of events that unravel his life.

The Writing
The above skit does describe the comic very well. I like the concept and i like where the story is going. I like the main characters and feel that the supporting cast add to the depth of the story. There is lots more going on that we are told and I'm stocking with it to see how it ends up. So far with over a hundred pages online this is good solid stuff.

The Art
I Like the art. The artists style is clean and simple the use of gray tones give some panels a sense of depth. My only moan about this is there are little or no backgrounds in many of the panels. This may have been intentional to move the story along quicker but I feel that maybe the artist could have spent a bit more time.

From Death Til Now - Web Comic

Now where to start with this one. . . This is a great tlittle online comic that has me hooked and desperate for more. Basically George and Virgil who are lifelong friend now in the twighlight of life go on a fishing trip. Sounds pretty dull but its anything but. A wonderfully crafted story that draws you in immediately. I'm not gonna say anymore about the plot as I dont want to spoil it just check out the sample page on the right and you'll know its not gonna be a boring strip about two old guys fishing. The Only thing I'm not keen on is the use of Copperplate Gothic font in the logo and web header buts that's just me.

The Writing
The main characters are very realistic and believable. There are some really good flashback sequences that fill in the background info once the story gets going giving a greater understanding of character motivations and aims. Now here's a statement. The two main character George and Virgil are a better duo than Will Smith and Martin Laurence. Better than Mathau and Lemon. . . So far.

The Art
I Like the art. Nice and simple with a animated feel to it. You can see this easily being translated to an animated version. The style of the art is similar, in my opinion, to DJ Coffman of Flobots and Hero By Night Fame. Done beautifully in black and white this comics is a quality read.

Veronica is a 30 year old Supervillain who has spent the last 3 years amassing state-of-the-art weapons, designing technology you could only dream of and plotting out how to save the world from itself. All this while you've been watching Pop Idol.. And the reason for this? Well as she puts so eloquently you're better to get it from her. Click here for her motivational introduction promo piece.

The Writing
Very Well done, the character borders on genius at times and at no point leaves you wondering about character motivations and aims. The concept of the story at its base level is along the lines of Marvel's Thunderbolts and other comics that focus on the the villain. I must point out that although I use the Thunderbolts as a reference this online comic is nothing at all like the Thunderbolts. I've read all 5 of the parts/issues so far and my enjoyment of this gets more as it goes. my only gripe is that the end comes to quickly. you can read the whole thing in less than 20 minutes.

The Art
I'm not a huge fan of the line work but the simplicity if the lines mixed with the colour used does work extremely well and does not detract from the story. The character designs are good and instantly recognisable as individuals. The action sequences well laid out and easy to follow. While I'd not have picked this up in a store due to the art it does not stop me really enjoying aspect of it online. . . or maybe its just because its free. I would however pick up a printed trade now that I've got into it. So final word is that the art grows on you.

Sam and Lilah - Web Comic

Found this little piece of web wonder while hunting around other webcomic blogs. I initially passed it by as from the impression I got it reminded me of that line of "girl friendly" comics Marvel brought out a few years ago. I was so wrong. This is a really well done love story with vague-ish biblical references. I believe that this came in 4th in the Zuda monthly. Here's how its described over on the Act-i-vate site. " Fate really is a four-letter word. When Lilah meets Sam at a coffee shop, things seem to be headed in the right direction. He's cute, fit, not shy but not cocky. The problem is, Sam is short for Samson and when your name is short for Delilah, that's Trouble."

The Writing
I don't think I'm doing this comic a disservice by saying that the writing is cute. The story is so far is about falling in love and overcoming the unique obstacle the main characters have to face. The interaction between the two main cast members flows well and although more related to the art of this comic the use of little emoticon symbols and sound effects to emphasise the action or lack of it in certain scenes is nothing short of genius. I've seen this kind of stuff used a fair bit in manga based stuff and although this has a manga-esque overtone it is essentially an American style book with a manga influence. The story so far have moved forward at an acceptable pace and has enough pull to keep me coming back.

The Art
The art is brilliant. While not usually a style I like manga-esque feel of the art works well for this story. Like I mentioned above there is a definite "Marvel Romance" feel to the art but don't let this detract from a really good script. From my point of view each page has been expertly designed and works as a stand alone piece of art. I can see various design influence throughout the strip that make me believe that the creative team really have an eye for good design and maximise each page layout getting the most impact possible from each panel. Also this is one of the first things I've read where great care has been taken to incorporate sound effects and symbols to enhance the actual story telling not your usual Thwack, Snikt, Boom! stuff here.

You ever read a comic and think to yourself "This would make a great movie"? Yeah, me too. This online comic would make a great movie and I think the creators already have their cast picked out. In fact I think that this was possibly a movie script turned into a comic book as it reads like a movie and the cinematic style of the art easily lets your brain join the dots to make this an almost cinematic experience. The concept behind this comic is not a new one and has been done a few times over my comic reading experience as well as in a few movies but rarely have I read a comic like this and been able to picture it as movie. Credit must go to the artist for his skill in bringing the likeness of certain actor through in his work. Now onto a quick synopsis. Heaven vs Hell in an all out action packed adventure featuring Tom Cruise, Jennifer Garner, Gene Hackman and Samuel Jackson. . . well that would be the movie but the comic is the next best thing so go read it.

The Writing
At times i forgot i was reading a comic and the story plays out like a movie. I guess this was planned as the company is called Cinema Comics. Anyway. . . Although similar themes and stories have been done in comic and movies over the years I feel this one is one of the best. The character are solid and through the writers vision you instantly like or hate the ones you're supposed to. The pacing is perfect and although some of the scenes could be extended they work really well in this 5 issue format. A good solid back story provides the foundations for this not so futuristic tale set in 2015.

The Art
Brilliant. After reading this all the way through I have to say that I'm surprised that Marc Borstel is not one of the biggest stars in mainstream comics today. His art style is up there with Alan Davis and Brian Hitch and his ability to render likenesses is better that Greg Land. The art is a big part of why I gave this comic a 10. Not only for the line work but the colours are amazing too. Almost Cinematic!! I've since been and found Mr Borstels blog and seen some of the other stuff he does. Simply breathtaking!

Tozo - Web Comic

Not very often you come across a gem like this. This book has a very European feel to it's style and in many way reminds me of things like Tin Tin with a smattering of Mr Ben and a flavour of moebius. The official synopsis describes the comic like this; "When Detective Inspector Tozo is asked to investigate the murder of an employee of the Financial Exchange, he has little idea that the trail will lead him into a shadowy and deadly world of political intrigue, smuggling and religious conspiracy." Which is spot on and saves me rabbling on about it.

The Writing
Enthralling, I normally read a webcomic over a few sittings this was one of the ones that I had get right up to date with before pulling myself away from the screen. The main character are instantly likeable and the addition of the Mecha supporting cast is a nice touch. We have religious themes and scientific wonders with an ominous foreshadowing of dread all taking place around a seemingly utopean monarchy run society.

The Art
Like I said above it has shades of Tin Tin and the tv show Mr Ben. I'd also throw in a similarity to Paul Smith (X-men, Leave it to Chance). The colours suit the themes of the story and are typical of the European stuff I remember as a kid. The art is simplistic with a slight slant toward being cartoony. This does not take anything away from the stroy, in fact it suits the story perfectly.

The Writing
Very sleek, Without knowing much about the characters I find myself enthralled with this story. It moves effortlessly from action to quiet somber moments and back again. The writer know how to build tension and does so expertly in one of the first main battle scenes. Oh and what a good idea with "Tails".

The Art
Takes a bit of getting used to but but its really nice. Different scenes have different colour themes through them which helps separate plots. The art reminds me of Simon Colby's early stuff or Martin Edmonds back when he worked on Accident Man at Toxic. Well worth checking this out.

Heist - Web Comic

Heist is the story of the world's greatest thief and follows his adventures as he steals things that no one else can. It's a fairly simple premise but I feel that there is lots more to come from this comic and as the pacing and art are good I'm going to stick with it for a while to see what's going to happen. My only issue is that its not easy to navigate through the site so that you can read the comic.

The Writing
As I mentioned above the pacing is good and the characters are intriguing. I feel like I've missed an origin or something as the story seems to pick up in the middle. Its a bit like watching Empire Strikes Back if you have not seen A New Hope, Really enjoyable and entertaining but you could do with knowing who all the characters are.

The Art
Great art, great colours great style. The main character looks a bit like Cobra Commander. The art is sharp, crisp and clean my only gripe. not getting enough of this comic.

OK hows this for a them. Group of Superheroes all working as a force for good under the guidance of a religious leader who is guiding their every move and more importantly is the giver of their abilities and has the power to take them away if they are not living up to his goals, which leads us to believe that there are darker undertones to the storyline. The basic premise as described on the site reads. "Superheros and Super Villains Clash — but what happens when the villain comes to know Jesus,
and the Superhero carries an evil secret?"

The Writing
Well I'll say this. I was originally put off this book because i was under the impression that it was a wholesome Christian comic boo. Nothing against those but they tend not to be my cup of tea. Once I started reading I found that the themes and ideas work really well and if I'd not had the preconception of this being a God botherer comic would have picked it up in print. Which by the way I'm actually going to do especially since I know that one of my online acquaintances takes over the art chores after Mr Miller's run is over.

The Art
What can you say about the art. . . . It's amazing. Mike S Miller is one of my favourite artist his style is so beautifully crisp and clean. The detail that he puts into his work is nearly at a technical drawing level with every frame looking almost like an instruction manual on how to draw terrific comic books. Now that's the fanboy rant about Mr Miller over. His art on this book, although done in Greyscale, is great and is what I've come to expect from this artist. My only problem is that I feel Mike does not do enough mainstream stuff. This book although good is not normally something I would pick up.

Retake - Web Comic

I've been on Drunk Duck for a while now and while much of the content there does not float by boat this comic certainly does. Retake by Dave and Dan (Mr Hades). Is a take on one of those classic superhero type stories. Guy down on his luck, in this case a frustrated actor, gains mysterious powers through alien technology and so on. The thing about this take on a classic theme is that it is actually very good.

The Writing
There seems to be a definite direction that this comic is heading in. The characterization is really good and makes the main character instantly likeable, if a little irritating. As the story progresses there are similarities in themes to properties like Ben 10, Marvel's Darkhawk, XO-manowar from Valiant, Robert Kirkman's Tech Jacket and so on. However its well worth a read and has some interesting subplots developing running alongside the main story.

The Art
Mr Hades (Dan Butcher) is definitely one to watch in the future. I've been a fan of his work over on the penciljack forums for a few years now and his stuff seem to get better and better. I'm expecting big things from him in the mainstream industry in the future. His art reminds me allot of DJ Coffman's style on Hero by night although not quite as polished yet. but every page he turns in seems to get better and better.

This is a great online comic. I highly recommend this to anyone and everyone. Great story great art and a weekly schedule. What more do you want. . . well how about mystery, intrigue and small doses of extreme violence. Greta stuff. This comic has a mature readers warning so don't be letting your kids read it, Although its not that bad, better safe than sorry though. Without ruining the story here's how the creator describes it. A dark, neo-noir semi-autobiographical mystery thriller concerned with dreams, family, and memory. Enjoy.

The Writing
The best way to describe this, i think is, if you like Lost (the tv show) you'll love this. Lots of suspense and lots hints at something just out of reach. The comic is about 70 pages in as this is written and has laid enough groundwork to make this one of the most intriguing online comics I've read in a while. The pacing is really nice, not too slow and not too fast.

The Art
Who knew black white and beige could work together so well, I guess Cameron Stewart did. The art is highly professional and very simplistic which suit the highly complex storyline. You might have heard of Cameron Stewart as he was the artist on Catwoman and Seaguy at DC and has worked on carious other comics such as Superman, Buffy, Hellboy and many more.

Last Blood - Web Comic

I'd call this a gem of a find. Its been going for a couple of years now and is already onto its second volume. Last Blood is the story of a group of human's, possibly the last remaining humans after a zombie outbreak. The story starts about a month after the outbreak started and the future looks very bleak. A small group of people are holed up inside a school in the middle of nowhere with none or little knowledge of how this nightmare started. I don't want to ruin anything for you but I'll just tell you that there are Zombies and Vampires and really good art so goo check it out.

The Writing
Great Story, Great Concept, Great Pacing. As with all good stories you are eager to know more about the characters. It has all the mainstays of a good zombie story, you know the ones; last remnants of humanity, no realistic hope of survival, Zombies closing in from all over. . . the usual except Bobby Crosby throws a few well throughout curve balls into the mix. . . Vampires. And for good measure Bobby actually gives us a plausible explanation (well plausible in the confines of the story) about the origins of the zombie. I wont tell you as it'll spoil the story.

The Art
Some of the best art in an online comic I've come across. Owen Giemi is an artist that is definitely going places and I loved for him to take over a book like The Walking Dead if Robert Kirkman ever needs a replacement for Charlie Adlard. The art is crisp and in a way does remind me of Tony Moore's run on the Walking Dead with a kind of Avatar art feel thrown in. This is definitely a comic I'd buy of the shelves. Now that its in it's second volume its gone full colour. Even Better!

The Fighting Stranger - Web Comic

Saw the title and was instantly hooked. First read it over at Zuda when it was part of one of the monthly competitions in september 2008. I thought it should have ranked higher than it did. Maybe it was a bit slow to start or maybe the just the first 8 pages were not enough to show people the potential this had, but now that its getting going I think its great. So far the characters seem really good and although we are early in the story, as of this post, I'm with it for the long haul.

The Writing
The pace so far has been steady with not too much in the way of action, although when we did finally get some around page 25 it was worth the wait. I eager to see where this story is going. We have the usual post apocalyptic backdrop as so many other web comics seem to although not much is given away except that breathing outside is not easy.

The Art
Good solid art. Reminds me of some of the art in 200AD over the last few years. Not much else to say about the art as it probably one of the most professionally finished web comics that I've come across.

Right. Rise of the Flobots is a story about a guy who keeps putting up campaign signs and keeps getting them destroyed or broken. . . No it's a story about an Iraq Veteran who has been sidelined due to injury and longs to be back in the field. . . No actually its a story about Robots in a far flung future that a fighting for survival in a post apocalyptic worlds or so it seems. I actually have no idea what Flobots is about. I started reading it because I was a fan of DJ Coffman's Hero by Night over at Drunk Duck. and was gutted when that stopped. I found out that he was doing stuff with the Band Flobots and thought I check it out.

The Writing
As a fan of DJ Coffman, I enjoy his writing style and know that it will lead somewhere interesting. Once I got past the two seemingly unrelated intro stories the main strip set in the future show lots of promise and feels like it could burst into life at any moment. Still waiting though.

The Art

I'm a fan of DJ's art. its simple yet good enough to keep you interested. It's easy to follow and has a very animated feel to it. I sometimes feel that animated style give a false sense of fun to some of the more serious scenarios in the storyline, but that's just a minor gripe. The colours are really good.

Magellan - Web Comic

Where to start with this one. This is online comic gold. A good strong setup, good character and good plots. Magellan is based around a school for superheros in training and the things that happen therein. It starts with chapter one to give you a tatse here is the set up. Kaycee heads off for Magellan Academy, the origin of Brelvis, Go! Anna takes on a small mystery, plus many characters are introduced - Nadine, Fatima, Freya, Tom, Charisma, Wombat-man and Epoch.

The Writing
The writing is top class, lots of similarities to other properties but lots of original ideas. The creator obviously grew up on super hero comics and his love of the genre shines through in his story telling. great characters that you root for and great character development throughout the series.

The Art
The art is steady and works with the story. Its not Jim Lee, but who is except Jim Lee. The style reminds me of Scott McCLoed. The colours are bright and vibrant and remind me of Marvel in the eighties.

Wizer is a surf Bum/Instructor who spends his days teaching in a beautiful sun kissed beach setting. Den-Arria is a space age warrior caught up in some kind of Galactic war. The two of them get thrown together and we have Surfboards and Rayguns. Bradley Overall shows lots of talent and promise with this online comic. A regular schedule could make this one of the coolest online adventures available.

The Writing
Shows lots of promise. Still in the very early stages, only a handful of pages uploaded so far. The Concept is one of Aliens and Intergalactic warfare descending upon earth and landing smack right into a scene from Point Break. Some of the main characters are already being fleshed out but there is enough to keep you wanting more.

The Art
Very cool art and colours. The art reminds me of cartoons such as "The Batman" and "Megas XLR". The main female character reminds me of Kiva. The art is very fluid and works really well with the story. A very professional finish would not surprise me if this title went on to get published.

Baja Wardenclyffe is a Privateer for the Earth government; she travels the outer reaches of space searching for anything noteworthy. A government privateer is provided with a ship, equipment and an android assistant, but is expected to provide their own wits, ingenuity and sense of adventure. Acting as an Explorer crossed with an Early Warning System, a Privateer will investigate anything that looks remotely interesting or remotely dangerous. (Lifted straight from the about section, I thought it describes things beautifully)

The Writing
Oh what a tangled web is weaved by the creator of Precession, Jake Staines. With flavours of Blade Runner, Alien, Space Odyssey and more this is a sci-fi adventure story that is well thought out and really well structure. I enjoy reading this although the pace is sometimes a bit slow but as with many web comics you have to wait patiently for updates.

The Art
I'm not a huge fan of the art in Precession although it does not detract from the story. OK that's technically not true. I love aspects of the art such as the machinery, tech and the environments but I not too keen on the actual character art. This story has loads of potential and the creator deserves loads of credit for the concept and the execution but may be missing opportunities to develop as a property.

Awakenings - Web Comic

I'm pretty new to this online wonder. At first glance i thought this some obscure horror comic that I'd have no interest in. Upon checking out a few pages I was hooked and before I new it I'd read the whole story so far. Awakenings is the story of a New York city detective hot on the trail of a gruesome serial killer only to find himself on the run when every lead points to the one person he never would have suspected -- himself.

The Writing
I found the story a bit slow, but that's not a bad thing I feel it works in the context of the overall feel of this online comic. I'm just desperate to know what's going to happen. I find that I like the characters and I root for the lead and hope that he overcomes the obstacles in front of him. Eric Hobbs has created a good solid story here and with over 120 pages so far I'm hooked until the end.

The Art
The art reminds me of a few different artist it has a Michael Ryan(he did lots of Wildstorm stuff) feel at times along with a bit of Kevin Sharpe (X-Treme X-men, New Resident Evil) and although not as polished as the two pros I just mentioned the art is a better standard than most web comics.

Questionable Content - Web Comic

Questionable content is a prime example of on online comic i should hate. I know absolutely nothing about Emu's . . . or Emo's and have never heard of half of the bands and music references that come up in the course of the story, however the characterization by J. Jacques and the smooth flowing story drags you in and makes you love the characters. I even like the strange girl who works in the library. This is one of my daily pleasures and find myself eager for more.

The Writing
You could easily believe that J. Jacques is writing from life. The interaction between characters is absolutely brilliant. The story takes you one way and then an other always entertaining and never too serious although it does cover some real issues involving suicide and heartbreak. This comic is not normally the type of thing I read but a story underlying story is what drives me to keep reading. I care about most if the characters and want to see what happens to them. This, for me, is the new Friends, albeit in an online comic format. Oh and the little anthro computer "Pintsize" with plans for world domination (pictured above) is hilarious.

The Art

As is the case with most webcomics the art at the beginning is a bit shaky but quickly progresses and with over 1300 pages done I'd put the art style up there with the like s of Jeff Smith's Bone or Scott Kurtz's PVP. This online comic is presented in full colour. There are also the occasional guest weeks where artists and creator from other online comics and medias take their own stab at the QC gang. There is however this really annoying bird that appears from time to time instead of the main strip and just basically insults everything. He's great by the way.

Found this online comic around a month ago and have fell in love with it. The Author "Faith Erin Hicks" is a Shuster Award winning creator for her work on Zombies Calling which was published by SLG. The story centres around the Lead character Hunter in an ice cold post nuclear war torn Britain. This has been going for a while now and is heading for its conclusion so I'd get in a read it now before Faith wins even more awards for her ability to tell fascinating stories with beautiful artwork.

The Writing
You instantly care about the characters and their plight. There are enough plot set ups to gain anyone's interest. as this speed towards its conclusion i hope that we are not left wanting when it comes to an end. The character of Hunter strikes me a s one who would easily transfer to tv or movies. This project could be huge with the right push behind it. I hope Faith does not drop the ball and make this a story to remember.

The Art
Reminiscent of Jamie Hewlitt the artwork has a slight manga influence but could easily be a vertigo book. The colours are cold and dark with spots of warm which depicts the climate in which the story is set perfectly.

I found Sacred Pie about a year ago and kept putting off reading it because i thought the art looked too much like the Beano or the Dandy. I thought this looks like a "fun" story. Boy was i wrong. I was wrong about the art, i was wrong about the story. This is an amazing body of work. The story centres around Sid, Bob and Roonas who are a bunch of typical slackers/wasters who do nothing but play video games etc. The three guys by pure chance (or so it appears) get caught up in an intergalactic Heaven vs Hell epic war. With more than a passing resemblance to various famous and some obscure Sci-Fi and fantasy stories/movies.

Writing

Great! Deep Space Battles, time travelling Medieval adventures, gladiator style alien prison planet epics. This story has it all. Fights, Love, Death, Deep emotion.

Art

This was what originally put me off reading this. but when i started it i soon forgot how bad the art was, only to discover than fairly quickly the art improved and improved and then went full colour then went all flashy too.

Zombies are cool. Hunting Zombies is cool. What could be better. how about hunting zombies and looting!

This is a great little web comic about survivors of a zombie apocalypse (usual set-up) what makes this different from a million other zombie tales is delivery.

Writing

This is one of the best written online comics i have come across. I've read it from the start and still have loads of unanswered questions. The subtlety of the character interaction is at times mesmerising and you seem to get hints of how bad things have been leading up to the current continuity but with enough drama to keep your interest and keep me coming back for more.

Art

Jenny Romanchuck is a talented individual. you can easily see in the artwork the she cars about the characters. Her development as an artist is amazing and through the 170 plus pages her artistic style has continued to develop.

Acrobat is a story of a superhero sidekick who after loosing his mentor makes the step up from sidekick to full blown hero, while dealing with all the normal issues of teenage life.

The Writing

Considering that the creator of this book is in his teens he does a very good job of conveying the emotional state of a teenage boy and the struggles that any teenager faces. He also does a good job and showing how that teenage kid deals with all the problems associated with being a costumed hero in ever expanding universe full of various challenges and revelations.

The Art

This is where, i think, many people might fall down with Acrobat as the art at the beginning of the story is that of a teenage kid with hopes of being a comic artist one day. As the story progresses (up to 17 online issues at time of writing this) You will see major developments in style and quality. I think that JD Smith will become a comic superstar in the coming years. for one so young he shows an great understanding of storytelling and pacing as his style develops i firmly believe he will fulfill the comic artist dream.

Freak Angels is an Free weekly online comic by the creative team of Warren Ellis and Paul Duffield.

The story centres around the Whitechapel area of London in a post apocalyptic vision of Britain.

The Writing

If you like any of Warren's other comics you'll love this. The pacing of the story fits perfectly with the characters and their situation. At time a few episodes can pass with not much happening but when it kicks off the pace changes and becomes faster to fit the action.

I find that every Friday I'm really disappointed when i reach page 6 as i have to wait for another week for the next installment.

The Art

Paul Duffield's art is simple yet elegant and the colours work really well with the tone of the story. Its hard to compare Paul's work with other artists as his style is quite unique, I love to tell you that if you like Jim Lee or Greg Land you'll love this but i cant. it has an animated quality which has a manga flavour without being remotely manga.

I looked around the big ol' Internet for a resource that could help me in my own quest to find good online comics and I've found the Internet wanting.

There may be cools sites like zuda .com, Drunk Duck and onlinecomics .net but they, i feel cover too much and don't filter out the drivel, well the last 2 don't. Zuda does have a high standard but that does not mean that they are all good.

There are millions of online comics out there and lots of them are really good. I personally am not a big fan of manga or fanstasy stuff and have never really been tempted to spend my hard earned cash on a title in the store that wont float my boat. That's where the web is different , for the most part web comics are free. I'm not talking about torrents and stuff I'm talking about people out there that publish their own work online and make it available for everyone.

So i come across a few manga and fantasy online comics I'm much more likely to give them a look and have become hooked on few things that ordinarily i would have avoided like the plague.

This blog is in no way intended to make you read every comic I list, but is simply a tool for you all to use to find something good to read when you have a spare 5 or 10 mins.
